Highlights for Magellan class 12th MayRevised & updated 19.5.14
The Y6 have all taken their SATs – I am incredibly impressed with how hard they have worked and the resilience they have shown this week.  Results will be out early in July.  The Y5 have been amazing too and very supportive of their classmates in Y6.
The Year 5 children have had a bit of an unusual week as a result of SATS.  They have designed their own games in PE each morning, refining them and deciding on instructions which they can explain to others.
Outside of the SATs our focus has been on mental maths –strategies for pace, although we have also been playing the maths games made by the Y5 (a very standard of home learning by all).
Literacy has been drama – in groups preparing a performance of a short play called ‘Jurassic Classroom’. As I was out of class on Friday I did not get to see the final performances but Mr Holt was impressed with the acting he saw.
Thursday afternoon - the children worked with Mrs Oakley on entries for a handwriting competition and with Mrs Matthews played a range of outdoor games. Mrs Spears is also impressed with their singing – they are working on songs from Frozen in their music lessons.
PSHCE - Following on from an E-Safety session this week, several pupils raised worries over a site called Talking Angela.  Information has been placed on the school’s website about this particular site. Anyone who wants to know more I recommend the article in The Guardian Newspaper (comes up on a google search) which quashes some myths about the site but also let’s parents know about some issues – the app can be played in adult & child modes, there is a webcam feature which takes ‘film’ of the person playing the app.  It seems it is a popular app for many children but it is easy to ‘toggle’ between adult and child versions.
Also in PSHCE, we have been working on decision making skills and on asking yes/no questions (this will link into next week’s Science).
Next week we are back to our standard timetable.

Maths Homework:  Maths Instant Recall sheets are sent home.  The tables gold. Silver and bronze challenge starts again next week – so lots of practice on times tables please. There are many good tables games on the computer which can help motivate the children.

Literacy Homework: We are about to start our new class book – Bug Muldoon and the Garden of Fear.  This is set in a house garden. We will start with descriptive writing about gardens. So, the children need to write a description of their own garden. They may wish to add a drawing or photograph.
