BRITISH VALUES

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values were reiterated in 2014 with the DfE reinforcing the need

“to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

At Dussindale Primary School we take our responsibility to promote community cohesion, generate a respect for difference and individual rights seriously.  Throughout the school pupils have the opportunity to:

  • Develop self knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Distinguish right from wrong and to respect the laws of the land
  • Accept responsibility for their behaviour
  • Show initiative and contribute to lives of others locally and in society more widely
  • Acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England (eg schools, the police etc)
  • Encourage respect for democracy and support in the democratic processes (e.g. electing school council, pupil surveys)
  • Encourage tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions i.e. respect for their own and other cultures
